Registration

Registration for Summer Term 2023 / Fall 2023 will open on Wednesday, March 29th. Course schedules will be published on Tuesday, March 28th.

Each student enrolled in a certificate or degree program is assigned a faculty advisor who is a full-time member of the teaching faculty or the Office of the Dean. The relationship between student and faculty advisor is considered central to the educational experience at MTSO. Faculty advisors assist students with planning their programs, identifying resources for further consultation, and formally approving course selections. While students are required to meet their faculty advisors on only a few occasions each year, faculty members are always willing to schedule additional appointments with students.

Returning students should confer with their faculty advisors in order to discuss course selections. The faculty advisor will then remove the registration lock on Populi permitting the student to register for courses. If your record still shows a registration lock, contact your faculty advisor to have it removed. New students who have not yet been assigned a faculty advisor should email Registrar Jeremy Garber at registrar@mtso.edu for guidance on first-semester course selection.

The first step in the registration process is to schedule an appointment (which does not necessarily have to be face-to-face) with your faculty advisor.

In preparation for your meeting, it is helpful to review your degree requirements and look over the published course schedules (both of which can be found at mtso.edu/academics/registrar) in order to surface any questions and develop a preliminary schedule. Your faculty advisor will unlock your registration once you have discussed your course plan.

Login in to Populi and navigate to the Registration Tab. For helpful guidance on how to register for courses for credit, audit, or to add yourself to a waitlist, review this brief article.

Email Forms / Templates for Various Registration Requests

Students must complete any listed prerequisites for a course before they can register for said course. To request permission to enroll in a course concurrently with or prior to taking prerequisite, send this email form to the course instructor and cc: registrar@mtso.edu. Be sure to replace the to: email address with that of the course instructor and also replace any {VARIABLE} as appropriate. Include a very brief statement of why this exception is warranted and why you believe you will be able to succeed without the normal prerequisite. The course will be added to your schedule once approval has been given by the course instructor.

Most courses have standard letter grades (though a select few are graded pass/fail as noted in their course description). This email petition template can be used to request a pass/fail grading option instead of a standard letter grade for a maximum of three courses (four if dual-degree). Note that the following courses are not eligible for the pass/fail option: CE501, CH501, CT549, DS660, DS665, DS670, ES500, FE850A/B, HB510, HM600, ME570, ME580, ME590, ME670, ME680, NT510, PC500, PT500, WO500, and, for MASJ students, CE562, CT560, HB/NT550, LS570, PT560, and PT610. Be sure to replace the to: email address with that of your faculty advisor and also replace any {VARIABLE} as appropriate.

Enrollment is capped at 14 credits in Fall or Spring semesters, three credits in January Term, and six credits in Summer Term. To request permission for a course overload, send this email form to your faculty advisor and cc: registrar@mtso.edu. Be sure to replace the to: email address with that of your faculty advisor and also replace any {VARIABLE} as appropriate. Include a brief statement as to why this exception is warranted and why you believe you can successfully manage the course overload. If your faculty advisor is supportive of this request, it will be forwarded to the dean for consideration and final approval.

Registration priority is determined by seniority (class standing). Although your course selections or waitlist requests will immediately display in Populi, seniority will override course registration order in the event that any classes exceed their maximum enrollment. If you are on a waitlist, you will be notified via email if/when seats become available.

Pay attention to the published add, drop, and refund dates before making any changes to your schedule through the Populi Registration Tab.
