Master of Theological Studies

Delve into the past – and shape the future.

There are a variety of reasons to pursue the Master of Theological Studies degree. You might be preparing for doctoral study, or you might want to develop theological perspectives relevant to your current vocation. MTS graduates have an appreciation for the evolution of the Christian tradition and understand the distinctive character of theological study—its methods, its traditions, and current proposals for its reinterpretation.

The 39-credit-hour MTS program, designed to be completed in two years, provides a broad foundation in the basic theological disciplines: Bible, Church History, Theology and Ethics. You will choose one area of concentration, achieving sufficient depth to read, discuss, research and write about its literature with understanding.

Students may concentrate in a traditional discipline in theological studies (Bible, Ethics, History and Theology). Students may also create an interdisciplinary concentration in consulation with the director of the MTS program, Dr. Ryan Schellenberg. The student may select a combination of upper-level courses with approval of the director that demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach that will inform their final thesis.

  • All of our graduate degrees include the Mid-Program Review. This course is designed for you to reflect on the midpoint of your vocational and academic journey. Students meet semi-regularly to evaluate academic progress, achievements, and opportunities for further growth and development.
  • All of our graduate degrees include a Cross-Cultural Immersion, giving students the opportunity to explore intersections of economic, ecological, racial, gender and LGBTQ+, and justice issues.
  • The MTS Thesis provides an opportunity for you to engage in in-depth research. The thesis allows the you to develop, in consultation with a faculty advisor, a research strategy, to demonstrate a mastery of some of the major sources and of significant issues in that area of study, and to articulate a coherent summary of that work with reasoned conclusions drawn from the study.

Students who take 9 credit hours each semester and at least 3 credit hours for one intensive term each year typically complete this degree within two years.

MTSO offers courses both in person and online. While some courses are available exclusively online or exclusively in person, the vast majority are available in both modes, employing HyFlex education.
